Gatehouse Church

The parish was known as Girthon until 1975 when it was united with the parish of Anwoth and the new title was Anwoth & Girthon. This title continued for 30 years until in 2005 it was decided to change to the more logical name of Gatehouse of Fleet Parish Church.

History

History

The present Gatehouse Parish is the union of three former parishes – Anwoth and Girthon, the River Fleet being the boundary between the two, and Borgue which lies between the estuary of the Fleet and Kirkcudbright Bay.

From the Manse

Dear Friends,
Pentecost is often described as being the birthday of the
Church. But it seems to me that the Church quite likes having birthdays. Christmas could be called the church’s birthday because that was when Jesus was born. Easter could be called the birthday of the Church because that was when the Resurrection happened. So why is it Pentecost that is most often attributed to being the Church’s birthday?

I think it is because, at Pentecost, we see the completion of the story of salvation. It is an ending, but it is also a beginning. We’ve had the birth of Jesus, we have had the death and resurrection, then we have had Jesus returning to his Father, and now, at Pentecost, we have the coming of the Spirit of God, the Helper, the Comforter, the one who is always with us.

It is an ending but it is also a beginning, because it is after Pentecost that the work of the early Church begins in earnest. It is after the coming of the Spirit in the book of Acts that we see the evangelising happening, the desire to share the good news and bring people to know Jesus, work which goes on today.

And that’s why Pentecost is called the birthday of the Church, because it is the coming of the Spirit which empowered the first Christians and still empowers us today, to go and make disciples. It was after Pentecost that the Church started to grow.

Wishing you God’s blessing this Pentecost and always,

Val
