D
ear Friends,

My wife Amanda received a “free gift” through the post last week. It was a little box of handcrafted chocolates, sent to her from a large online fashion retailer. She hadn’t ordered anything from them for a while, so they sent her this gift to remind them to her, and hopefully get her to order something again. This retailer wanted to rebuild their relationship with her. Now, although we enjoyed the chocolates, we are always immediately suspicious of anything that seems too good to be true. Mrs Johnstone’s purse therefore stayed firmly in her pocket.

We often refer to Christ’s coming at Christmas in terms of gifts. The word became flesh and dwelt among us. Unbidden and unsought, Christ comes to earth to reveal what God is like in a way that eludes human reason. The incarnation of Christ, 2000 years ago in Bethlehem is something no one could have made up as a recipe for a restored relationship with God. But this “free gift” from God; this grace from God is what it is all about.

This Christmas we are acutely aware of life’s intractable problems. How on earth are we to solve the climate crisis, the economic crisis, the international relations crisis brought on by the war in Ukraine and the war in Palestine? All these problems seem unsolvable given normal patterns of human behaviour. How can a baby born in the backwater of an ancient empire 2000 years ago have anything to say about any of them? But the gift of Jesus is simple without being simplistic. The heart of most problems is the problem of the human heart.

At Christmas some people try to fill the hole in their heart by spending lots of money and eating far too much. The truth is that the “free gift” Jesus offers is the only gift that meets the needs we seek to fill. He offers the security that frees us to love our neighbour as we love ourselves. He offers us the peace that in trust then releases generosity. He offers the forgiveness that releases us from defensiveness and self-justification.

The Gospel is good news because it meets the deepest needs of the human heart. This is where the real transformation of individuals and society is to be found. Jesus is offering all of us the most wonderful “free gift” of all, one that leads to an enduring relationship with God. Will you accept it?

Andrew

The weather is hotting up here in Mzuzu. Temperatures are now around 30oC. We’re in the cooler, hilly north of the country, but it’s still a month or two until we expect the hottest weather. These temperatures are not uncommon in the UK now, though we visited for a...

A Piano for Tarff and Twynholm Church

We have acquired a piano to replace the keyboard previously used by musicians who were unfamiliar with the organ. The Eavestaff Pianette which is in very good condition will, hopefully, be an asset at Church services. It was formally introduced to the congregation at...
